The door after two coats of alkyd stain and two coats of Pratt and Lambert Vitralite were applied.  We cleaned the rusty hinges with sudsy ammonia to bring out colors in the metal and then we varnished over the rust, sealing it from the air so it won’t rust any further.  The homeowner preferred this natural look over painting the strap hinges black.
